How to Use Family And Friends 3 Testing And Evaluation Book
Family And Friends 3 Testing And Evaluation Book is a useful resource for teachers and students who are using Family And Friends 3, a primary English course that combines language learning with life skills development. The book provides different ways of evaluating children's progress, through ongoing assessment, children's self-assessment and formal testing.
In this article, we will explain how to use the book effectively and what benefits it can bring to your teaching and learning.
Ongoing Assessment
Ongoing assessment is key to monitoring children's progress. This can be achieved in a number of ways:
Monitoring: When children are engaged in productive activities such as speaking or writing, work around the classroom and check their progress, and offer help where appropriate.
Regular reviews in the Class Book and Workbook: The purpose of the double-page Review section in the Class Book and Workbook is to review the main learning points of the unit, giving you an opportunity to evaluate how much children have understood. You can use flashcards to focus on vocabulary, sing the songs again to help children memorize the key structures, and go through the Class Book review activities with the whole class. You may wish to make notes on which children are having difficulties in recognizing or producing words. These notes can be recorded later on the teacher evaluation sheet (page 7).
Self-Assessment
Self-assessment is a key part of children's development as language learners. It encourages important learning skills such as monitoring progress, setting goals, and assessing their own learning styles.
Talk to children about how they feel about their work. Use the self-evaluation activity at the end of the Workbook Review page. Ask individual children to express whether they feel happy or worried about their progress in English. It is highly motivational for them to feel that their teacher is taking an interest in their assessment, so make time to comment on children's assessments. If a child expresses particular difficulties in the self-assessment, arrange to talk to him/her after the class.
Testing
Tests are a more objective check on what exactly children have learnt and what needs more consolidation. From this diagnostic information, you can decide on remedial activities.
The book provides different types of tests for each unit: a skills test, a grammar and vocabulary test, a phonics test, and a summative test that covers all four skills. The tests are designed to be easy to administer and score, and they include clear instructions and answer keys.
The book also provides a My family test at the beginning of the book, which can be used as a placement test or a diagnostic test to assess children's prior knowledge of the language covered in Family And Friends 3.
